Running a CCTV camera down a drain to find the fault

When drainage goes wrong, where to look

Water pooling where it should disappear, a floor waste gurgling when the washing machine drains, a smell that no cleaning shifts: these are the signals that a drain is failing somewhere out of sight. The question is always which drain, and whose.

Slow fixtures in one bathroom usually point to a local blockage. Multiple fixtures backing up at once mean the fault sits further down the line, often in a shared stack or a boundary trap. Water rising in a shower or floor waste is sewer, and it needs a plumber fast. Ponding outdoors during storms is stormwater, and in this suburb it collects at the foreshore fast.

Each of the six services below has its own page with the full detail. This hub routes you to the right one, then explains how we diagnose, what different buildings do to their drains, and what the ground itself means for the work.

Where Milsons Point's stormwater ends up

There is almost nothing left to soak here. The suburb packs into 0.2 square kilometres of apartments, forecourts and roadway, and every drop of rain that lands on it moves. Steep falls take run-off off the bridge approach and down to the water through box drains and pits sized for a suburb with more grass than it has now.

  • Hard surface everywhere Rain cannot soak in, so volume hits the drains all at once during southerly busters.
  • Low ground at the foreshore The forecourts near the pool and the wharf are where surcharge shows up first, ponding across pavements before the system catches up.
  • Ageing pits and box drains Decades-old concrete pits silt up, crack and lose their falls, so water stands where it should race.

That is why stormwater work here is less about installation volume and more about regrading, clearing and rebuilding what is already in the ground.

New drainage line laid and levelled in an open trench

Six drainage services, each with its own page

  • Drainage repair & installation: fixing failed sections and designing new drains, from a single boundary line to a full site system.
  • Blocked drains: clearing blockages in sinks, stacks, floor wastes and boundary traps, with jetting and diagnosis.
  • Blocked sewer: sewage-specific work, from rising in fixtures to boundary trap problems and shared-line faults.
  • Stormwater: pits, box drains, surface drains and downpipe connections, regraded so water moves.
  • CCTV drain inspections: camera surveys that show the exact fault without guessing or digging.
  • Pipe relining: a seamless liner cured inside the existing pipe, with no digging through finished surfaces.

Grease, markets and century-old clay

Not every blockage here is storm-driven. The cafes and restaurants clustered around the station and Alfred Street feed fat loads into shared stacks and street mains. Grease sets hard in cooler sections of pipe the way it does in any kitchen drain, only multiplied across dozens of units.

Under the interwar blocks, original earthenware sections survive: cracked, displaced and sitting beneath decades of dense redevelopment. The street mains themselves are century-old, beneath one of the North Shore's oldest urban footprints, failing structurally with bridge-era ground disturbance part of the story.

When a drain here blocks repeatedly, it is usually one of these three culprits, and the camera confirms which.

A closer look at each drainage service

Drainage repair and installation

Failed drains get properly repaired, and new drains get properly designed. We replace collapsed sections, correct falls, connect downpipes and lay new lines for renovations and rebuilds, working around the access constraints of a suburb built wall to wall. Every job is quoted fixed before excavation starts.

Blocked drains cleared

From a kitchen stack running slow to a boundary trap completely stopped, we clear blockages with jetting and the right heads for the fault, then diagnose why it happened so it does not simply return next month. Grease from the eateries near the station is a repeat offender we deal with constantly.

Blocked sewer lines

Sewage rising in a shower, floor waste or lowest fixture means the fault is downstream, and it is urgent. We clear the line, camera it to find the cause, and separate lot-owner plumbing from shared lines so the right party is dealing with the right repair.

Stormwater systems

Pits, box drains, surface grates and downpipe connections: we clear them, rebuild the failed ones and regrade the sections that pond. In a fully paved suburb with steep falls to the harbour, a stormwater system that works is the difference between a wet forecourt and a wet lobby.

CCTV drain inspections

A camera through the pipe shows the fault on screen: the crack, the root ball if there is one, the displaced joint, the grease line. It ends guesswork, settles disputes between owners and committees, and tells you whether clearing will hold or whether the section needs repair or relining.

Pipe relining

Where a pipe is failing but its structure can carry a liner, we pull a resin-saturated liner through and cure it in place. The result is a seamless new pipe inside the old one, with no digging through lobbies, courtyards or finished bathrooms, which matters enormously in dense shared buildings.

How it works

How we diagnose a drain, start to finish

Diagnosis follows a decision path, and we walk it in order rather than jumping to the most expensive option.

1. Clear it first. Jetting clears the immediate blockage and restores flow. Most drain calls end here, fixed on the first visit with the gear on the van.

2. Look at why. If a blockage repeats, smells persist, or multiple fixtures were affected, the CCTV inspection shows the pipe's actual condition. Footage beats speculation, every time.

3. Match the fix to the fault. A grease line needs clearing on a schedule. A cracked earthenware section under a walk-up needs repair or relining. A structurally failed main needs replacement. The camera tells us which, and the quote reflects only what the job genuinely needs.

That path is why we do not sell relining to every drain that blocks once, and why we do not clear a collapsed pipe and call it fixed.

Different buildings, different drain trouble

Drain problems in this suburb track the building you live in, and knowing the pattern tells you what to watch for.

Interwar art deco walk-ups

Original earthenware drains, galvanised waste lines and 1930s fixtures mean blockages from cracked and displaced clay, and smells from dried-out traps and failed vents. Repeated blockages in one of these blocks almost always mean the pipe itself is failing, not that the last plumber cleared it badly.

1980s-2000s strata towers

Boom-era construction left quick-fix fittings in risers and ceiling spaces that now leak into the apartments below, and shared stacks carry grease and solids from dozens of kitchens. High-volume use blocks stacks faster than any single house ever would, and access to the fault runs through common property.

Commercial tenancies near the station

Grease loads, high fixture counts and long trading hours mean fat builds in cooler pipe sections and floor wastes choke with debris. These drains need scheduled jetting more than they need emergency callouts, and we set up both.

If your building fits one of these pictures, the relevant child page above has the detail for your situation.

Rock, fill and run-off: what the ground means for drains

Soil here is rock and fill, and each cuts a different way. Rock means excavations for pipe replacement are slower, priced honestly as rock work rather than quoted as soft ground and discovered later. Fill means ground movement, and movement is what displaces old earthenware joints and cracks century-old mains over the decades.

Roots barely feature. With almost no tree canopy over the pipes, root intrusion is a smaller part of the story here than in leafier suburbs. The trade-off is volume: with nothing to soak, every storm sends full run-off into the system at once.

Surcharge, not seepage. The failure mode is surcharge at the foreshore low ground rather than slow seepage, and salt-laden air off the water adds its own corrosion cycle to grates, pit lids and exposed fittings.

Practically, that means:

Repeats get camera-checked

Because fill movement and old clay make "it blocked again" a structural question, not a cleaning question.

Stormwater gets sized to the hard surface

Not to a garden that does not exist.

Exposed metal near the water gets marine-grade replacements

Because the salt air eats low-grade fittings between inspections.

Good questions, straight answers

Drainage questions Milsons Point committees ask

Do you clear blocked drains in apartment buildings with shared stacks?

Yes, most of our drain work here is in shared buildings, and we clear unit-level blockages and main stacks, document the fault for committees, and quote fixed prices owners can approve without a second inspection.

What actually blocks drains in a suburb with almost no gardens?

Grease and fat from the eateries around the station, structural failure in century-old street mains, cracked earthenware under the interwar blocks, and storm debris washed into pits during southerly busters.

What is a CCTV drain inspection and when do I need one?

A camera is pushed through the pipe to show the exact fault on screen, and it is the right call when a blockage repeats, when a drain smells persistently, or when a committee needs evidence of where responsibility sits.

Can you reline a pipe instead of digging up the courtyard or lobby?

Where the pipe is structurally sound enough, a resin liner is pulled through and cured in place, forming a sealed pipe inside the existing one without digging up lobbies, courtyards or finished floors.

Who pays when a blocked sewer turns out to be a shared line?

That hinges on where the failure sits, so we isolate and photograph the exact fault, giving owners and committees the records they need to settle responsibility between lot owners and the owners corporation.

Do you handle stormwater pits and box drains near the harbour?

Yes, we clear, repair and regrade pits, box drains and surface drains at the foreshore low spots, so storm water ponds in the drain instead of a lobby, forecourt or basement car park.

Drainage problems rarely stay contained for long. A blocked stack becomes a toilet overflowing emergency, and a slow leak from a failed drain connection becomes a leak detection job.

For everything else, the plumbing hub covers the everyday fixes and the emergency hub covers the ones that cannot wait. The full picture of how we work starts at home.
